Australian Rebates for Water
There are a number of rebates available to help offset the cost or installing a new rainwater tank on your home. Often two or more rebates can be combined to give a significant discount on the total cost.
Water for the Future: National Rainwater and Greywater Initiative
Rebates of up to $500 are available to households for either:
- The purchase and installation of a new rainwater tank which is connected for internal reuse of the water for toilet and/or laundry use; or
- The purchase and installation of a permanent greywater treatment system.
More information, as well as rebate application forms can be found on the Australian Government website.
Sydney Water Rainwater Tank Rebate
A rebate of up to $1,500 is available to Sydney Water customers who install a rainwater tank before 30 June 2011. Rainwater tanks installed as a condition of BASIX certification are not eligible for a rebate.

NSW DECC Rainwater Tank Rebate
Within NSW, but outside of the Sydney Water supply area? The rebate of up to $1500 is still available through your local water authority. More information is available from the NSW Department of Environment and Climate Change website.
Victorian State Government initiatives
The Water Smart Gardens and Homes rebate scheme rewards residential customers connected to a mains water supply for purchasing water-saving devices and services, thereby reducing their water consumption.

The rebate is based on the size of the tank and requires the tank to be connected to toilet and/or laundry facilities as follows:

- Rainwater Tanks, 4000+ litre capacity, connected to toilet or laundry - $900 Rebate
- Rainwater Tank 4000+ litre capacity, connected to toilet and laundry - $1000 Rebate
Householders who have already claimed a tank rebate prior to 1 January 2007 are still eligible for a rebate if they purchase an additional large tank connected to the toilet and/or laundry.
