Foilboard for Timber Floor Joist "New Applications"Using Floor Saddles
Foilboard® Insulation Panel is a rigid sheet manufactured from fire-retardant expanded polystyrene with pure aluminium foil laminated to both sides. It is slimline and fits easily into any cavity. There is no building paper used in its manufacture, it is impervious to moisture and will not delaminate.
Foilboard® is lightweight, safe to handle and easy to install and, because it contains no hazardous fibres, no protective clothing is required. Foilboard® also achieves extremely high acoustic ratings in walls. The most common applications are walls, brick veneer, double brick and precast concrete. Foilboard® is also used extensively under timber floors, in cathedral ceilings, factory roofs and sheds.
Under FloorJoist "Existing Applications" Using Standard Fastners (tape joins)
Super 15 FOILBOARD strips were seated on bottom flange of plywood beams to give rating of R2.6 to the floors
Conventional timber floor framing with Standard 10 FOILBOARD under. Will achieve R2.2
TIMBER FLOOR
CONCRETE FLOOR
Fixed under the floor joists FOILBOARD INSULATION PANEL greatly improves the thermal performance of a timber floor.
With an existing house where it is impossible to get into walls and roof space is limited FOILBOARD INSULATION PANEL offers a “last chance” to lower heating costs and improve comfort, especially under feature timber floors.
SUPER 15 – R2.6 STANDARD 10 – R2.2
Where heating is used in suspended floor slabs, FOILBOARD INSULATION PANEL achieves considerable energy savings.
SUPER 15 – R2.6 One side has an anti-glare coating
UNDER FLOOR
Foilboard can be sliced up in between floor joists before flooring laid, or foil sheets can be attached to underside of joists if room permitting. As with other installations, all joins are sealed with tape, preventing air filtration. The result will be a floor with a similar insulation value to that of your ceiling, making timber floors warm to walk on during winter, and cooler during the summer.

METHOD OF CALCULATING QUANTITIES OF FOILBOARD
1. Measure floor area.
2. Add 5% to area to allow for cutting and wasteage.
3. If using 2.44m sheets divide the area by 2.93 to give the number of sheets required.
If using 2.70m sheets divide the area by 3.24 to give the number of sheets required.
4. Round up to the next full sheet.
5. Floor saddles should be on joists at approx 600mm centres and spaced at 200mm from sheet ends.
6. For retro-fits Foilboard should span across the underside of joists and between bearers using three fastners per joist.Joins do not need to be made on a joist and you should tape all joins.
