Washing Machines & Detergents
WASHING MACHINES Front loaders are much more efficient than top loading machines generally they have slightly slower washing times (typically 60-90 minutes) Generally they use less water which means that on a warm wash they use less energy (this is particularly important if you don't have mains water connection) They are much more gentle on clothes and usually wash better (although all washers have to meet minimum wash performance standards) They can be more expensive to purchase (although not always) Many have only single cold connect (internal water heating) which means water is heater using day rate electricity (some have limited cold water washing options and/or hot and cold connections). DETERGENTS Avoid using washing detergents with high salt content. Many cheaper brands use salt as a filler. It does not add to the washing power of the powder. Select from concentrated powders, or, better still, use liquid detergents. * Avoid fats (from soaps), bleaches and other disinfectants.
